sony DVP-NS755V/NS775V sacd/DVD player mods
The Sony DVP-NS755V DVD-V/SACD player is a good budget player that has introduced many people to SACD. While "good" is adequate for most consumers, most audiophiles strive for a higher quality sound. Now, there is no reason to sell your NS755V to move up to a higher level of performance. SACDmods.com is proud to offer modifications to the DVP-NS755V, the player most in need of our services.
The NS755V is essentially a SACD capable machine built onto a DVD-Video player; therefore, its systems were designed with affordable high-quality video playback in mind. An example of this philosophy is the use of a switching power supply instead of a linear power supply which is best for audio. Switching power supplies are used because they support a stand-by power function, are compact, and most importantly are cheap to build. Switching power supplies are not often used in high end audio equipment because they introduce high-frequency "switching noise" into the DC outputs. This noise adversely effects the audio signal leaving the player. This high frequency noise is broadcast into the unit by way of the switch mode transformer's magnetic field and the power outputs themselves. Other examples of the video-based design is the use of a noisy surface mount clock circuit and the no-name analog coupling capacitors.
The NS755V sounds somewhat harsh and thin playing both SACD and CD as a stock unit. It suffers from the classic "digitalitis" that we have been correcting since the dawn of the compact disc. The highs were somewhat lacking, and the bass was just plain sloppy. My modifications were designed to correct these audio deficiencies, and the video was even improved along the way.
The upgrade consists of the following:
Power Supply Modifications:
1. 3-API/DELVAN 330uH Inductors installed on the power supply board to form a LC filter for high frequency noise emanating from the switching power supply. These and the Black Gate capacitors lower the noise in the DC power supplying components crucial to the sound such as the DAC and op-amps.
2. 3-Black Gate 1000uF Capacitors installed on the power supply board to form a LC filter for high frequency noise . These are an extremely quiet capacitor which when used in conjunction with the inductors remove the majority of the noise from the power supply. Both a BG filtering cap and an inductor is installed on the +11V supply, the -11V supply, and the +5V supply to the DAC.
Clock Modifications:
3. DEXA "NewClassD" D-Clock Precision Master Clock Generator--This is a new clock design by Lars Clausen, formerly of LC Audio. Accuracy is rated at +/-1ppm of rated frequency and the new clock generates a true square wave output. The D-Clock has a unique microtransformer coupled output that eliminates ground loops in the clock circuitry. This clock measures and sounds superior to the LClock XO3. Clock modifications make any CD player sound remarkably smoother and more detailed. Most notably, you may find yourself able to sit and listen for hours at a time when you may have become tired of listening to more than a few albums previously.
Specifications:
Accuracy: +/- 1ppm
Jitter: 1.5pS
Df(9-24V): Max 1Hz
Control Functions: Host Vcc
Power Supply Requirements: 9.00 - 24.00 Volts DC 20 mA

Audio Output Stage Modifications:
4. Black Gate Capacitors installed on the output stages (47uF Non-Polarized NX HiQ series). Yields improved bass response and much more detail. Lower noise. Order the multi-channel mods and capacitors are installed on all output channels to replace the ultra-cheap capacitors Sony uses on the rears/sub/center outputs. Two are needed for the stereo modifications, and six are needed for multi-channel mods.
5. Replace stereo opamp with Burr-Brown OPA2134. The stock opamp is replaced with a more detailed, but yet easy to listen to Burr-Brown (TI) OPA-2134, which is a low precision version of the 2132 used in Sony's European models. The 2134 has the same performance as the 2132, but with a little wider DC offset tolerance.
6. Bias op-amps into true Class-A operation.
The modifications corrected each deficiency that I discovered in the NS755V's audio playback performance. The player is now "musical," and I enjoy listening to it. The bass is solid and tight, the mids clean and enjoyable, and the highs are smooth. I believe it is now on a nearly even playing field with the modified CE775. The video performance is great also. Although I wasn't even attempting to improve the video playback, it did improve! As I am not a video playback or movie expert, I cannot say exactly how it improved, but it did. I now consider the NS755V to be another "great" player at its price point. For those who are already enjoying it, you should hear it now!
Total Price (parts+labor):
STEREO: All of the above, but only the front channel opamp is replaced. Multichannel outputs remain in stock form. $390.00
MULTICHANNEL: All of the above, and all opamps in the analog stage are replaced with the OPA2134. $402.00
